Summary of Results for EAA Winter Flight Fest 2022 Contest by Jeff Annis
After a 2 year lapse in running the EAA Winter Flight Fest contest due to Covid, it was great to get back to running it this year. The contest ran for 3 days starting on Friday Feb. 11 at 2 PM and ended about 1 PM on Sunday Feb. 13. On Saturday the museum was open to the families from 10 AM until 4 PM with numerous aviation related activities and displays for kids to participate in. Our group helped kids fly their balsa gliders, explained about our free flight models on display, demonstrated indoor free flight models, provided handouts and put up some flights during each of the 3 air shows. The EAA Ski Plane fly-in and Chili cook-off which was to have run as part of this event had to be postponed 1 week due a lack of snow. Waves of people continued to come to the event throughout the day, with an estimated 700 people attending.
The contest was a huge success with 11 contestants from 3 states ( Wi, IL, Oh ,) flying in 13 different events and making a total of 64 official flights. Contestants coming from out of town could stay at the EAA Lodge on the EAA grounds for a very reasonable price. Our contest portion of the event also ran 5 PM to 10 PM on Friday and Saturday after the museum closed to the general public. Contestants although, could fly models throughout the day on Saturday, but at some risk with the general public walking throughout the museum.
A highlight of the contest was the One-Design, Big Smash P18 mass launch with 7 models launched at the same time with all squeezing for the smaller higher ceiling floor space. John Kagan cleaned up by winning all 3 mass launch events by a huge margin. Limited penny plane was won by Dave Lindley with a time of 8:01 and third place by Jocelyn Buxton, a Junior , with a time of 6:21. Many thanks to HG Frautschy for organizing this event with the EAA and John Lorbieckie for making the outstanding laser engraved awards incorporating the classic Bong Eagles logo. All had a great time flying in this unique Eagle Hangar venue surrounded by historical vintage WWII aircraft.
